The umbrella battle

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: same war, three flags.

The industry is fighting over what to call the work. The work itself is measurable and mostly identical. Here is the map.
If you searched "aeo vs seo"

What we measured about it: 1,900 times a month of demand on the comparison itself: the market is asking which flag to follow.

Run on your market, a read shows: which surfaces and which acronym's tactics your market actually rewards, measured: your real search demand under every phrasing, which AI answers in your market are open, partial or closed (with the evidence), what your competitors run in the public ad archives, and your break-even numbers computed from your own economics.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) competes for positions on a ranked results page. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) compete for citations inside AI-generated answers; they are near-synonyms, with GEO leaning toward Google's AI Overviews and generative engines and AEO toward answer engines broadly. The measurable difference is the unit: rankings are gradual positions, citations are binary slots. By search demand, 'generative engine optimization' leads at 4,400 searches a month, 'answer engine optimization' draws 2,400 searches a month, and the comparison query 'aeo vs seo' itself is asked 1,900 times a month. (Nukebook, 2026-08-28.)

One measured warning for anyone sizing this space: the bare acronym "aeo" shows 27,100 searches a month, and it belongs almost entirely to a clothing retailer, not to answer engines. Acronym-level volume in a young space lies; phrase-level volume tells the truth. "Search everywhere optimization," the newest flag, draws 260 searches a month. measured

What actually differs in the work

Ninety percent is shared: crawlable pages, real substance, answered questions. The citation-specific ten percent: self-contained extractable passages, figures with provenance, and re-checking whom the answers cite instead of where you rank. Whichever acronym wins the naming war, that ten percent is the part rankings-era habits miss.

Our position, stated plainly

We use GEO because Google's AI Overviews are where our measurements show the volume today (27 of 100 difficulty on this comparison query says the naming war itself is still winnable). But we measure outcomes, not vocabulary: citations won on buyer questions, whatever the winning acronym turns out to be.
