What we measured about it: 720 times a month of demand at difficulty 0, and we hold a measured example of the trap: a coined term at exactly zero searches.
Run on your market, a read shows: the demand under every candidate name for your category, counted before you commit: your real search demand under every phrasing, which AI answers in your market are open, partial or closed (with the evidence), what your competitors run in the public ad archives, and your break-even numbers computed from your own economics.

Category naming has three honest options: adopt the phrasing the market already types (fastest demand access, least differentiation), claim an existing-but-unowned phrase (the usual sweet spot), or coin a new term (maximum differentiation, zero initial demand). The decision should start with measurement: count the demand under every candidate phrasing before committing. In one real client run we measured a coined category term at exactly 0 searches a month: the brand's entire vocabulary had no search demand, while adjacent phrasings held six figures monthly. 'Category naming' itself is searched 720 times a month in the US at difficulty 0. (Nukebook, 2026-08-28.)
The craft literature lives under "category creation" (70 searches a month) and "category design" (110 searches a month): small queries, big consulting fees. The strategy conversation these feed actually surfaces at scale under "gtm strategy" (2,400 searches a month). measured
The honest rule for coined terms
Coin the term for differentiation, but never build distribution on it alone: route the coined name through phrasings that already carry demand, and measure quarterly whether the coined term is acquiring searches of its own. A coined term at zero after a year of marketing is a verdict, and it is better read early.
The test before the trademark
Before naming anything: pull the volumes on every candidate, check who owns each phrase's page one and AI answer, and price the click. An afternoon of measurement beats a year of evangelizing a word the market declines to adopt.
One read: your demand, your winnable AI answers, every competitor's ads, and your site's catch rate. Price and scope on a short call, plainly.
